Exodus 19:17

King James Bible

"And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount."

Commentary

Moses acts as mediator between God and Israel, physically leading the people from their encampment toward the divine encounter. This movement from camp to mountain represents a transition from ordinary life to sacred space, emphasizing Moses' unique role as the one who bridges human and divine realms. The purpose is explicitly stated as a direct encounter with the divine—a rare and momentous event in biblical narrative. This phrase underscores that God has invited the entire nation, not just Moses, to witness His presence at Sinai. The people position themselves at the mountain's base, maintaining a reverent distance from the summit where God will manifest. This spatial arrangement reflects the holiness boundaries established earlier in the chapter, where the mountain itself becomes increasingly sacred toward its peak.
