Exodus 18:17

King James Bible

"And Moses’ father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good."

Commentary

Jethro, a Midianite priest, speaks with familial authority to Moses after observing him judge the people from morning until evening. Despite being an outsider to Israel, Jethro's relationship and wisdom position him as a trusted advisor who can offer frank counsel. Jethro directly critiques Moses' solo leadership approach, recognizing it as unsustainable and ineffective. This blunt assessment introduces one of Scripture's earliest lessons on delegation and shared leadership, challenging the notion that spiritual leaders must bear every burden alone.
