Ephesians 2:22

King James Bible

"In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit."

Commentary

Paul addresses Gentile believers in Ephesus, emphasizing their inclusion "in Christ" alongside Jewish believers. The phrase connects to the previous verse about Christ as the cornerstone, showing that Gentiles are now full participants in God's spiritual temple. The passive construction indicates God is the builder, joining diverse believers into one unified structure. This architectural metaphor depicts the church as a living temple under continuous construction, where each believer is a vital stone. The purpose of this building is to become God's dwelling place—replacing the physical Jerusalem temple with a spiritual one made of people. This echoes Old Testament promises of God dwelling among His people, now fulfilled in the church. The Holy Spirit is the agent who makes this divine habitation possible, both uniting believers and making them suitable for God's presence. This completes the Trinitarian picture: built on Christ, inhabited by the Father, unified by the Spirit.
