Deuteronomy 8:16

King James Bible

"Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;"

Commentary

God provided supernatural sustenance during Israel's 40-year wilderness journey through manna—a previously unknown food that appeared daily. This miraculous provision emphasized Israel's complete dependence on God rather than conventional food sources or agricultural self-sufficiency. The wilderness experience served as divine discipline, teaching Israel humility through dependence and testing their faithfulness through trials. God's purpose was formative rather than punitive, using hardship to reveal and refine their character. The ultimate goal of God's testing was blessing—preparing Israel for prosperity in the Promised Land. This reveals that temporary hardship served a redemptive purpose, ensuring they could handle future abundance with wisdom and gratitude.
