Deuteronomy 8:14

King James Bible

"Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;"

Commentary

Moses warns against pride that emerges from prosperity—when material abundance causes self-sufficiency and arrogance. This phrase captures the subtle spiritual danger of success, where comfort leads to forgetting one's dependence on God. The consequence of pride is spiritual amnesia—losing sight of God's presence and provision. In the covenant context of Deuteronomy, forgetting God meant abandoning the relationship that defined Israel's identity and purpose. Moses grounds the warning in Israel's foundational story of deliverance from slavery. This historical reminder emphasizes God's past faithfulness and power, making any forgetfulness particularly inexcusable given such a dramatic rescue.
