Deuteronomy 8:12

King James Bible

"Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein;"

Commentary

Moses warns against the spiritual danger that comes with material satisfaction and abundance. The phrase captures the basic human tendency to forget God when physical needs are met, addressing Israel as they prepare to enter the prosperous Promised Land after forty years of wilderness dependence. The progression from eating to building permanent dwellings marks the transition from nomadic survival to settled prosperity. This represents not just wealth but stability and self-sufficiency—conditions that can lead to pride and forgetting one's dependence on God who provided these blessings.
