Deuteronomy 8:1

King James Bible

"All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers."

Commentary

Moses emphasizes complete obedience—not selective adherence—to God's laws as Israel stands at the threshold of the Promised Land. The phrase 'this day' underscores the immediacy and ongoing nature of the covenant relationship, requiring active observance rather than passive acknowledgment. Obedience directly links to survival and flourishing, echoing the creation mandate to 'be fruitful and multiply.' For a nation emerging from slavery and wilderness wandering, these promises of life and growth represent both physical prosperity and covenant blessing. The ultimate goal connects present obedience to the ancient promise made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 'Possess' implies not merely entering but establishing permanent residence, transforming divine promise into lived reality through faithful action.
