Deuteronomy 6:8

King James Bible

"And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes."

Commentary

God commands the Israelites to physically bind His words to their hands, symbolizing that divine law should direct all their actions and work. This instruction follows the Shema and emphasizes making God's commandments visible and tangible in daily life, later interpreted both literally (as tefillin/phylacteries) and metaphorically. The commandments must also be worn prominently on the forehead, signifying that God's word should govern one's thoughts and perspective. The placement 'between the eyes' ensures constant visual reminder and public declaration of covenant loyalty, marking the wearer as devoted to Torah.
