Deuteronomy 6:25

King James Bible

"And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the LORD our God, as he hath commanded us."

Commentary

Moses defines righteousness for Israel as covenant faithfulness—not abstract moral perfection but concrete obedience to God's revealed will. This righteousness is relational, establishing right standing within the covenant community. The conditional "if" emphasizes human responsibility while "observe to do" combines careful attention with active obedience. "All" underscores the comprehensive nature of covenant loyalty—partial obedience falls short of the covenant ideal. Living "before the LORD" implies constant divine awareness and accountability, while "as he hath commanded" grounds righteousness in God's specific revelation rather than human invention. The phrase personalizes the relationship—this is "our God" who has spoken directly to Israel.
