Deuteronomy 6:16

King James Bible

"Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah."

Commentary

This command prohibits testing God's patience or demanding proof of His presence through defiant challenges. The Hebrew word for 'tempt' (nasah) implies putting God to the test by doubting His faithfulness or provoking Him to prove Himself. Moses references the incident at Massah (Exodus 17:1-7) where the Israelites, lacking water, quarreled with Moses and questioned whether God was truly among them. The name 'Massah' literally means 'testing,' serving as a permanent reminder of this faithless moment that exemplified how not to relate to God.
