Deuteronomy 6:14

King James Bible

"Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you;"

Commentary

This is a direct prohibition against idolatry, commanding Israel to reject the worship of any deity besides Yahweh. The phrase 'go after' implies active pursuit or following, warning against not just worship but even the attraction to foreign religious practices. This specifies the particular temptation Israel would face: the deities worshiped by neighboring Canaanite nations. These local gods (like Baal and Asherah) were tied to fertility and agriculture, making them especially appealing to Israelites settling into an agricultural lifestyle in the Promised Land.
