Deuteronomy 1:39

King James Bible

"Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it."

Commentary

God recalls the Israelites' fearful claim that entering Canaan would result in their children becoming victims of war. This references their rebellion at Kadesh-barnea after the negative spy report, highlighting their lack of faith in God's protection. These children were morally innocent at the time of their parents' rebellion, likely under the age of accountability. Their innocence exempts them from the judgment that condemned the faithless adult generation to die in the wilderness. In divine irony, the very children the parents claimed to protect through disobedience will be the ones to inherit the Promised Land. God's covenant faithfulness transcends one generation's failure, ensuring His promises endure through their offspring.
