Deuteronomy 1:35

King James Bible

"Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers,"

Commentary

God pronounces judgment on the adult Israelites who rebelled at Kadesh-barnea, refusing to enter Canaan despite witnessing His miracles. The emphatic 'surely not one' underscores the finality of divine judgment against their unbelief and disobedience. The Promised Land is characterized as inherently 'good'—fertile, abundant, and divinely chosen. This description heightens the tragedy of forfeiture, as the rebellious generation will miss what God had prepared as their inheritance. God references His covenant oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, emphasizing that His promises remain unchangeable despite human failure. The next generation will inherit what their parents forfeited, demonstrating both divine faithfulness and the consequences of unbelief.
