Deuteronomy 1:31

King James Bible

"And in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that the LORD thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place."

Commentary

Moses recalls Israel's firsthand witness of God's care during their desert journey from Egypt. The wilderness period served as a proving ground where the nation experienced both trials and divine provision, making God's faithfulness undeniable. God's relationship with Israel is depicted through the tender image of a father carrying his young child through difficult terrain. This metaphor emphasizes not just protection but intimate, patient care—suggesting God bore their complaints and weaknesses alongside meeting their physical needs. The comprehensive nature of God's care extended through every step of their journey to the edge of the Promised Land. This closing phrase underscores God's consistency and completion of His promise to bring them safely through their wanderings.
