King James Bible
"And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of Eshcol, and searched it out."
The spies redirected their journey upward into the hill country of Canaan, following Moses' instructions to scout the Promised Land. This mountainous terrain represented the heartland of the territory God had promised to Israel. Eshcol ('cluster') was a fertile valley near Hebron, later famous for its enormous grape clusters that required two men to carry. This specific location demonstrated the land's extraordinary fruitfulness, validating God's description of it flowing with milk and honey. The spies conducted a thorough reconnaissance of the area, gathering intelligence about the land's resources and inhabitants. This careful investigation would form the basis of their report back to Moses and the congregation.
