Deuteronomy 1:20

King James Bible

"And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Amorites, which the LORD our God doth give unto us."

Commentary

Moses recalls his words to Israel at Kadesh-barnea, emphasizing his role as mediator between God and the people. This phrase introduces a pivotal moment when Israel stood at the threshold of the Promised Land. The 'mountain of the Amorites' refers to the hill country of southern Canaan, representing the gateway to the Promised Land. The Amorites were one of the dominant Canaanite peoples, and their mention here symbolizes the formidable challenge Israel faced. This declaration affirms God's covenant promise to give Israel the land, emphasizing divine ownership and gift rather than human conquest. The present tense 'doth give' expresses certainty that God's promise is already in effect, requiring only Israel's faithful response.
