Daniel 2:6

King James Bible

"But if ye shew the dream, and the interpretation thereof, ye shall receive of me gifts and rewards and great honour: therefore shew me the dream, and the interpretation thereof."

Commentary

King Nebuchadnezzar sets a seemingly impossible condition—his advisors must first tell him what he dreamed before interpreting it. This unprecedented test was designed to verify whether their interpretations had any genuine supernatural insight, as only divine revelation could reveal a dream known only to the dreamer. The king promises lavish compensation including material wealth, prestigious rewards, and elevated social status. In the Babylonian court, such royal favor could transform one's entire life and lineage, making this both a tremendous opportunity and a life-or-death pressure. The repetition of his demand emphasizes the king's absolute authority and impatience. This final command leaves no room for negotiation, setting up the crisis that will ultimately showcase God's power through Daniel when human wisdom fails.
