Daniel 2:12

King James Bible

"For this cause the king was angry and very furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon."

Commentary

Nebuchadnezzar's rage intensifies to a double expression of wrath because his wise men failed to reveal both his dream and its interpretation. Ancient Near Eastern kings expected their court advisors to demonstrate supernatural abilities, and this failure challenged both their competence and the king's authority. The king's decree encompasses all wise men in the capital, not just those who failed him, reflecting the arbitrary and absolute power of Babylonian monarchs. This sweeping death sentence sets up the crisis that will thrust Daniel and his friends into direct confrontation with imperial power.
