Daniel 12:13

King James Bible

"But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days."

Commentary

God commands Daniel to continue living faithfully until his natural death, implying his apocalyptic visions are sealed for a future time. This personal address comes after revealing distant prophecies, reassuring the aged prophet that his work is complete and he need not witness these tumultuous events. Daniel is promised the peaceful rest of death, a merciful reprieve from the tribulations he has foreseen. In Hebrew thought, this rest suggests both physical death and a state of peace while awaiting resurrection. The promise culminates in Daniel's resurrection and receiving his appointed inheritance when God's kingdom is fully established. The phrase 'thy lot' echoes the tribal land allotments of ancient Israel, symbolizing Daniel's guaranteed place in the eternal kingdom he prophesied.
