Colossians 1:23

King James Bible

"If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;"

Commentary

Paul emphasizes the conditional nature of experiencing the reconciliation described in previous verses—believers must remain steadfast and firmly rooted in their faith. The architectural metaphors ('grounded' and 'settled') suggest building on a solid foundation that can withstand external pressures. The Colossians face the danger of being shifted from the gospel's promise of future glory by false teachings circulating in their community. Paul reminds them they have already received the authentic message, implying no supplemental philosophy is needed. Paul uses hyperbolic language to emphasize the gospel's universal scope and rapid spread throughout the Roman world. This counters any local heresies claiming special, secret knowledge by asserting the gospel's public and cosmic reach. Paul establishes his apostolic authority as a servant of this universal gospel, not a sectarian message. His personal involvement validates both the message's authenticity and his right to warn against deviations from it.
