Colossians 1:15

King James Bible

"Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:"

Commentary

Christ perfectly represents and reveals the unseen God, making the divine nature visible to humanity. The Greek word 'eikon' (image) indicates an exact representation, not merely a resemblance, establishing Jesus as the definitive revelation of God's character and being. This title designates Christ's supreme rank and authority over all creation, not temporal priority. In Jewish culture, 'firstborn' conveyed preeminence and inheritance rights, affirming Christ's sovereignty rather than suggesting He was created.
