Colossians 1:11

King James Bible

"Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;"

Commentary

Paul prays that believers receive divine empowerment drawn from God's own magnificent strength. This is not human resilience but supernatural fortification, emphasizing that the source and measure of this strength comes from God's unlimited power. The purpose of this divine strength is endurance—both patience (bearing difficult circumstances) and longsuffering (bearing difficult people). These paired virtues reflect the character needed to persevere through trials and maintain love toward others despite provocation. This endurance is not grim determination but is accompanied by joy, transforming mere survival into triumphant living. The addition of joy distinguishes Christian perseverance from stoic resignation, showing that God's power produces both strength and gladness simultaneously.
