Acts 14:4

King James Bible

"But the multitude of the city was divided: and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles."

Commentary

The gospel message in Iconium created a sharp polarization among the populace, splitting the city into opposing camps. This division reflects a pattern throughout Acts where Paul's preaching consistently provokes both acceptance and fierce resistance. One faction aligned with the Jewish leaders who opposed the apostles' message about Jesus as Messiah. These Jews likely saw the apostolic teaching as a threat to their religious authority and traditional interpretation of Scripture. The other group supported Paul and Barnabas, presumably including both Jews and Gentiles who believed their message. Their allegiance demonstrates the gospel's power to transcend ethnic boundaries and create a new community of faith despite opposition.
