Acts 14:20

King James Bible

"Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe."

Commentary

After Paul was stoned and dragged outside Lystra (v. 19), local believers gathered around his apparently lifeless body. Their encircling presence suggests both mourning and protective solidarity, demonstrating the courage of these new converts who risked association with a persecuted apostle. Paul's sudden ability to stand and return to the very city where he was nearly killed reveals either miraculous healing or remarkable resilience. This bold re-entry demonstrates his unwavering commitment to the gospel despite life-threatening opposition. Rather than recuperating, Paul immediately continues his missionary journey to Derbe, about 60 miles southeast. This swift departure shows both practical wisdom (avoiding further violence) and apostolic determination to spread the gospel to new territories.
