Acts 14:12

King James Bible

"And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker."

Commentary

The Lystrans identified Barnabas with Zeus (Jupiter), the king of the Greek-Roman pantheon, likely due to his imposing presence or dignified bearing. This reflects the pagan worldview of the audience, who interpreted the apostles' miracle through their polytheistic lens rather than recognizing the true God. Paul was associated with Hermes (Mercury), the messenger god who served as Zeus's spokesman in Greek mythology. This identification reveals how the crowd perceived the apostles' roles and relationship to each other. Luke explains that Paul received this designation specifically because he did most of the talking, matching Hermes's function as divine herald. This detail shows how the Lystrans' misunderstanding arose from observing natural human dynamics and forcing them into their mythological framework.
